Business tablet contract deals - what you need to know

When UK businesses buy tablets through us, the split between iPad and Samsung is far less lopsided than handsets. Tablets are bought for specific jobs, not as default devices, and that changes the pattern.

Two things sit at the top of what we see. First, most business tablets are single-user, not shared. Even in small teams, the tablet goes to one person and stays with them. The exceptions are retail counters and in-store sign-off devices, where a single tablet gets used by multiple staff.

Second, connectivity is the deciding question. Every buyer we work with lands on the same first question: Wi-Fi only, or cellular with a SIM? Field engineers, delivery drivers, and reps on the road need cellular. Office, restaurant and retail devices almost always run on Wi-Fi.

Please note: figures and patterns above are drawn from our own active UK SME accounts accrued over 27 years in the industry.

Why choose a business tablet contract?

Buying tablets on contract keeps device costs off the balance sheet, splits payments across the term, and bundles cellular data where you need it. Here's what that means when you're rolling devices out across a team.

Zero upfront capex

Spread the device cost across 12 to 36 months, freeing cash for other priorities rather than absorbing a lump sum per unit.

Bundled cellular data

Cellular tablets ship with the SIM already provisioned on the network you choose, sized to the data allowance you need. No separate SIM order.

Fleet management built in

iPad enrols into Apple Business Manager; Samsung enrols into Knox. Both integrate with standard MDM platforms for zero-touch setup and remote configuration.

Mix devices on one account

iPad for executives, Samsung for field teams, rugged for engineers, all on one bill with one account manager.

5G ready across networks

Cellular tablets on all four UK networks. Choose by coverage and price rather than being locked to one network's hardware terms.

Refresh at contract end

Upgrade to the latest model, keep the tablet on SIM-only, or refresh selectively across the team when the contract ends.

What UK businesses actually choose

  • Drawing from our own tablet customer data, the split between iPad and Samsung comes down to the use case, not the buyer's preference.
  • Samsung wins the business-critical utility work. Field engineers, digital signage, retail counters, and cost-sensitive rollouts land on Samsung because the entry price is lower, the rugged range is stronger, and native phone-calling on selected models means one device covers both calls and apps.
  • iPad wins the premium and prestige tier. Executives, sales reps who present to clients, healthcare in private practice, and education (particularly with Apple School Manager) go iPad, usually on the Pro line. iPad Pro dominates iPad estate purchases.
  • Rugged tablets sit as their own category. Anywhere the tablet takes real physical treatment, drops, dust, weather, construction sites, warehousing, rugged is the only sensible choice regardless of iPad-vs-Samsung preference elsewhere in the business.

Can I get business tablets on contract across EE, O2, Vodafone and Three?

Yes. We supply iPad and Samsung Galaxy Tab business deals across all four UK networks, so you can match the tablet to the best coverage and tariff for your sites rather than being tied to one network.

What tablet is best for Office Work?

Currently, the Microsoft Surface Pro 12th edition remains one of the best tablet models in the world, not just the office. It also doubles up as a business laptop!

It essentially functions as a mini-PC, with the hardware packed into this device proving quite impressive: an 8th-gen i7 intel core, 8-16GB of RAM, up to 1TB SSD storage, an 8MP camera and much more!

We think this Microsoft model is fantastic, although worth noting that it does not support USB-C.

Are iPads Good for Business Use?

Depending on your daily use, choosing an iPad for business use is the right call – especially if you are already using another Apple device. Like all other models in this category, the iPad is much lighter and easier to transport than a conventional laptop.

With the right set-up, employees will enjoy using all the same applications and accessories as usual, wherever they go. Utilising iPads for your business are truly a great way to improve efficiency and connectivity without bringing you over your budget.

Do I need a cellular tablet, or will Wi-Fi only work?

Wi-Fi only is fine if the tablet stays in one place with reliable Wi-Fi, such as offices, retail counters, restaurants, and presentation rooms. Cellular is essential for tablets that leave the building. Field engineers, delivery drivers, sales reps on the road, and multi-site healthcare staff all need cellular.

Can I tether from my phone instead of buying cellular?

Yes, and for occasional use it often works out cheaper than a full cellular contract. For daily field use, a dedicated cellular tablet is more reliable and doesn't drain the phone battery.

Can a Samsung tablet run Microsoft Office?

Yes – Simply download Microsoft Office 365 from the Google Play store, selecting the specific Office app from the search results.

Next, install the application, open it once downloaded and sign in. It’s really very simple & straightforward, although only compatible with devices running the Android OS “KitKat 4.4” or later.

How do I use a keyboard with my tablet for work?

This process is as straightforward as plugging your keyboard into the adapter – provided your work tablet features USB and keyboard compatibility.

For a Bluetooth keyboard, open up the Bluetooth menu to find and add the new device, then start enjoying your wonderful wireless keyboard!

Please note, this process may vary depending on the make and model.

Can I get a tablet with phone-calling capability?

Yes, selected Samsung Galaxy Tab models make and receive calls natively. iPad doesn't offer equivalent functionality. Useful if you're consolidating from separate phone-and-tablet setups.

What device management options come with business tablets?

iPad works with Apple Business Manager and all major MDM platforms. Samsung works with Knox and standard MDM. Both support zero-touch enrolment and remote configuration across the fleet.

More about our business tablet deals

Business tablets sit in a more focused role than phones. Most teams don't need one, but the teams that do rely on it every day. We've supplied UK businesses with tablets for years, at prices lower than going direct to the network. Learn more about using tablets for business from our industry insights below.

Why businesses choose iPad vs Samsung Galaxy Tab

The reasons customers give us are consistent, and they're practical rather than brand-led.

1. They already run on Apple, or already run on Android

Teams using Macs and iPhones default to iPad. Teams using Windows and Android phones default to Samsung. Cross-ecosystem tablet deployments create friction that most buyers avoid unless they have a specific reason.

2. Rugged requirements push to Samsung

Apple doesn't make a genuinely rugged iPad. Once field work enters the picture (engineers, trades, warehousing, delivery), Samsung Galaxy Tab Active becomes the default because there's no equivalent iPad SKU.

3. Cost per unit at scale

When buying 20 or 50 tablets, the per-unit gap between iPad and Samsung matters. Cost-sensitive rollouts, digital signage in particular, land on Samsung for that reason.

4. Premium presentation and executive use

Where the tablet is seen in front of clients, or where senior staff expect it, iPad is the requested device. iPad Pro dominates this tier.

When a business tablet makes sense (and when it doesn't)

Keeping a purely objective outlook, here's how a tablet may or may not make a suitable option for your business.

A tablet is the right call when:

  • Field or on-site staff need a larger screen for forms, signatures, or documentation that phones don't handle well
  • Retail or hospitality staff need shared point-of-sale or customer-facing devices
  • Sales reps present to clients and need a larger display than a phone
  • Digital signage or fixed-location display is the primary use case
  • Staff on BYOD phone policies need a company-supplied device for work-specific software

Worth weighing a laptop or larger phone instead when:

  • Modern phones (6+ inch screens) already handle the workload
  • There's no clear daily workflow the tablet would serve
  • A laptop would serve the same purpose with more capability
  • Occasional larger-screen use can be handled by tethering from phones

Most businesses that come to us for tablets have a specific workflow in mind, and that workflow decides the device. If yours doesn't, it's worth a five-minute conversation before committing.

Best tablet plans by industry

Unsurprisingly, different sectors buy tablets for very different reasons. The ones that come up most for us are:

  • Trades and field engineering. Rugged Samsung Galaxy Tab Active with cellular. Used for job sign-off, client signatures on invoices, photo documentation of completed work. One tablet per engineer. Buyers prioritise low per-unit cost because field tablets take a beating.
  • Retail and in-store. Standard iPad or Samsung Galaxy Tab, Wi-Fi only. Point-of-sale, customer sign-off, staff forms. Compact form factors preferred for counter use. One of the few genuine shared-device scenarios.
  • Field sales. Standard mid-range tablets rather than rugged, cellular for reps on the road. Larger screens preferred for client presentations. Typical entry point around £14 to £16 per device per month.
  • Healthcare. Cellular tablets for staff working across sites. iPad common in private practice; larger deployments often specify Samsung for cost and manageability. Device management critical for security and compliance.
  • Hospitality. iPad mini or compact Samsung Galaxy Tab, Wi-Fi over the venue's network. Order-taking at the table, floor-plan management, EPOS integration. Rarely cellular.
  • Digital signage. Samsung/Android tablets mounted permanently, running always-on displays. Cost per unit matters more than premium specs; Android's kiosk-mode support is stronger than iPad's.
