The talk about Apple’s cheaper iPhones has really heated up recently. After they moved away from the ageing SE look and brought in the “e” line with the iPhone 16e last year, the iPhone 17e now feels like it’s just around the corner. Word from various leaks suggests we could see an official announcement as early as Thursday, 19th February 2026. It’s most likely just a straightforward press release on the Apple Newsroom page rather than a full-blown event.
This doesn’t look like your usual small yearly tweak. It seems more like Apple has cherry-picked some of the nicest bits from the last couple of flagships and wrapped them into something that won’t break the bank. A sensible way to get decent modern tech into more people’s hands.

The iPhone 17e is shaping up to be surprisingly capable for the money. Almost like a highlights reel of recent Apple goodies:

The main talking point is the A19 chip, the same one that’s in the standard iPhone 17 from last September. It might be a slightly cut-down version (one fewer GPU core than the Pro models, most likely), but day-to-day it should feel very close to what the regular 17 offers.
Crucially, that means full Apple Intelligence support. The sharper Siri, those writing and image tools that run on the phone itself. With 8GB of RAM expected across the board, it ought to handle all that smoothly. And it’ll probably keep getting big iOS updates right through the 2030s, so no worries about it feeling outdated quickly.
A rumour that’s been doing the rounds quite strongly is that the old notch is being replaced by Dynamic Island. That would give the front a much cleaner, up-to-date appearance, in line with the rest of the current iPhone family.
To stop the price creeping up too much, though, it’ll almost certainly keep the 60Hz screen refresh rate. No sign of the 120Hz ProMotion that arrived on the standard iPhone 17. The overall shape looks set to follow the iPhone 15/16e mould: nicely rounded edges and noticeably slimmer bezels.
This might be one of the bigger deals. The iPhone 17e is tipped to use Apple’s next custom 5G modem, the C1X (building on the C1 that debuted in the 16e). Ditching Qualcomm completely is quite a statement from Apple.
For normal use it should bring better battery life and more reliable 5G signal. Because the modem and A19 chip come from the same in-house team, they ought to work together more efficiently and help the phone last longer between charges. The N1 connectivity chip is also expected, which means Wi-Fi 7 support. Handy if you’ve got a newer router at home for quicker downloads and streaming.
True to form for the “e” models, it’ll most likely stick to a single rear camera to keep manufacturing costs sensible. The good news is it’s rumoured to be the same 48MP main sensor that’s in the current top-end phones.
The A19’s image processing should still deliver proper high-end results. Things like 24-megapixel “super-resolution” shots and noticeably better low-light performance. On the front there’s talk of an 18MP selfie camera with Centre Stage, which makes a real difference for video calls and portraits.
People gave the 16e a fair bit of stick for not having MagSafe, and it looks like Apple has paid attention. The 17e should get full MagSafe compatibility, so all the magnetic wallets, stands, car mounts and battery packs will work properly. Wireless charging is expected to hit 25W too. Matching what you get on the more expensive models and making a nice practical difference day to day.
If you’re still on an iPhone 11, 12, an older SE or anything roughly that vintage, the iPhone 17e is looking like a brilliant upgrade path. Modern design, seriously quick performance, decent cameras and all the new AI features, reportedly around the £599 mark (same ballpark as the 16e launched at).
Obviously if you really need a proper zoom lens or that super-smooth 120Hz screen, you might be better off with a second-hand or refurbished iPhone 16 Pro. But for the huge majority of people, the 17e seems to pack in enough flagship-level stuff to feel like a proper step forward without the eye-watering price.
