iPhone 6 Plus
The behemoth has arrived. This is the phone that sets about redefining what it means to be an iPhone. With a 5.5” screen, weighing in at 172g, it is a giant amongst ants and it’s time to see if the iPhone 6 Plus lives up to expectations.
The 6 plus measures in at an impressive 158.1mm x 77.8mm x 7.1mm and tips the scales at 172g. With a premium metal body and boasting a full HD, 1920 x 1080 display (that’s a 401 PPI) – the 6 Plus is the first of its kind in the iPhone family. The LED-backlit display has impressive viewing angles thanks to Apple’s use of “dual-domain pixels”, which makes for an excellent visual appearance – especially if there are a few of you crowded round the screen.
Things are different on the iPhone 6 Plus. Some serious hand shuffling is required to move up to the top of the screen – especially when exiting an app by clicking the home button below the screen and then reaching for an app icon on the top row.
To combat this Apple has cooked up “Reachability” in iOS 8, which aims to reduce the amount you need to stretch your thumb to the very top of the screen.
Introducing iOS 8
The iPhone 6 Plus ships with the very latest version of Apple’s mobile platform – iOS 8- which brings with it various enhancements and improvements as well as some new apps and features.
iOS 8 kicks off with a smart, slick and welcoming interface that is full to the brim with interesting and innovative features.
One of the most ingenious new features is the ability to reply to a message from the notification alert at the top of screen, saving you from having to load up the messaging app every time.
Packing a punch
Providing the power behind the scenes on the iPhone 6 Plus is a 1.39GHz dual-core A8 processor with 64-bit architecture and 1GB of RAM.
Good news for those super users – Apple have introduced a 128GB model, more than makeing up for the lack of a microSD slot.
8MP camera with phase detect autofocus and OIS
The camera has been improved in the iPhone 6, though you might not realise it if you simply look at the specs. The rear camera is 8Mp, with a True Tone dual-LED flash, its aperture is f/2.2 and the pixels are 1.5 microns.
An all new sensor means with new autofocus, advanced face detection and digital image stabilisation features will mean improved photographs.
Integrated image editor
One of the major new additions to the Photos app is the new integrated image editor. It supports standard features such as crop, rotate and filters, but it also offers advanced settings allowing full control over light (exposure, highlights, shadows, brightness, contrast, black point), color (saturation, contrast, cast), black & white (intensity, neutrals, tone, grain).
Slo-mo and FaceTime
There’s also an even slower slo-mo feature that can shoot at 240 frames per second, so when running that clip at one-eighth of the speed of normal video you’ll get some impressive slow motion results, improved even more so by the better video stabilization.
The front-facing FaceTime HD camera has a new sensor, a better aperture and better low-light photographs. It’s also able to use the Burst mode and HDR!
The iPhone 6 Plus has the screen, an appealing package of upgrades over the previous generation and iOS 8 has narrowed the feature gap that Android managed to open in the last couple of years.
