HTC Touch “Plus” |
The new HTC Touch Plus has upgraded the popular original Touch’s User interface, and added a much needed slide out keypad - which thankfully adds no unnecessary bulk to the device.
|

The HTC Touch Plus (aka as the HTC Dual) starts with the basic tablet shape of the earlier model, but has added a number pad that can be hidden behind the 2.6-inch, QVGA touch screen.
Just like its predecessor, the original HTC Touch, the new model runs Microsoft's Windows Mobile 6 Professional, but includes a new way of controlling touch screen-based devices developed by HTC called TouchFLO.
This allows it recognize and respond to the sweep of a finger across the screen, allowing users to easily launch applications without a stylus. This is a tri-band GSM phone with GPRS and EDGE. Unlike the earlier version, the Touch Duo has support for the European version of HSDPA. In addition, it has Bluetooth 2.0 but not WI-Fi.
It includes 128 MB of RAM and 256 MB of ROM. It also has a slot for microSD cards.
This device has a 2.0 megapixel camera on its back, plus a front-facing one for video conferencing.
Just as with the original HTC Touch, the new HTC Touch “Plus” feels great, with a wonderful black rubberised finish that looks and feels great. Meanwhile, as a significant improvement on the original, the Touch Plus comes with HSDPA and a sliding keypad!
HTC has created software that's easy to operate by finger, using tap and gestures. The screen requires a firmer touch than prior Windows Mobile devices, so if you end up getting one, then we recommend you don't be shy - press it firmly for best results.
There's the Today theme with quick access to an application launcher, the weather and a listing of calendar events. The on-screen keyboard is still the tiny Windows Mobile variety rather than a specially created one (or licensed 3rd party full screen keyboard) with larger keys that would make SMS possible via finger. So be prepared to whip out the stylus for text entry….
The HTC Touch Plus is al;so know as the HTC Touch “Dual” elsewhere in the world.

The HTC Touch Plus runs Windows Mobile 6 Professional on a 201MHz processor with the standard 64 megs of RAM and 128 megs of flash ROM.
It's an unlocked triband GSM phone with EDGE for data. The first version released will be triband 900/1800/1900MHz, which is better suited to Europe and Asia!
The remarkably small Touch Plus also has WiFi, Bluetooth 2.0, a 2 megapixel camera and a standard QVGA resolution display. The 2 megapixel CMOS camera with fixed focus lens takes acceptable photos. Given how little room there is inside the phone for camera hardware, we're not surprised that image quality took a hit - Images suffer from excessive foreground sharpening (so much so that detail is actually obliterated) that jars with un-sharpened background areas and creates a sense of limited focus.
In summary:
The HTC Touch Plus is a beautiful, very small PDA phone. It's the perfect phone for style conscious buyers who need a PDA's features and advanced functions, but don't want to carry an ugly brick. The Touch Plus isn't meant to compete with hardware-keyboarded PDA and smartphones like the BlackBerry 8800 though.
